Today, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) announced that Florida’s unemployment rate continued its decline, dropping down to 8.7 in April 2012 – the lowest since January 2009. The April 2012 rate was 1.9 percentage points lower than the April 2011 rate of 10.6 percent.  (more)

Although the arrest of the suspects in the robbery / murder of 55-year old Rajni Patel at the A&M Discount Beverage on SE Duval Street is not happening quickly enough for the public, progress is being made in the investigation.  Lake City Police Department Public Information Officer, Stephen Shaw, says all leads are being followed. The Suwannee County Health Department has issued a rabies alert following a positive laboratory result from a skunk.  The alert went into effect on Thursday.  Suwannee County Health Department Administrator Pamela Blackmon says the alert is for a specific area within Suwannee County. (more)

Five new slow-speed, minimum-wake zones are now in place on the Santa Fe River and will be in effect during Memorial Day weekend, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and county officials.  The zones are the product of the FWC and the counties responding to boater concerns about safety on the river. The Highway Patrol says smoke from a brush fire burning near Levy County Road 343 may affect portions of several roads in the area for the next several days.  If you plan on heading south the roads possibly affected are Levy County roads 343, 337, 326 and 335.  Also potentially affected are U-S Alternate 27 and U-S 41. Saturday, FAM Fest sponsored by Haven Hospice joins the Lake DeSoto Farmers Market as Wilson Park is filled with not only the farmers market, but a 5K Run/Walk, art show by the Art League of North Florida, food, drinks and live music featuring renowned regional all-woman band, Patchwork, sponsored by the farmers market.  All proceeds from this event will benefit Haven Hospice and their programs such as Camp Safe Haven. Saturday, Relay for Life will be hosting a Benefit Golf Tournament for the American Cancer Society.   The event is at Quail Heights Country Club.  Cost is $75 per player or $275 for a four-person team.  The tournament is sponsored by Save-A-Lot and features a $1,000,000 Hole-in-One Shootout.
